Magnetite supports Katie Kelly on her road to Rio for the 2016 Paralympics

magnetite announced katiekelly sponsorshipSydney, February 2016: Magnetite is on board with Australian and World Champion Paratriathlete (PT5) Katie Kelly.

Katie Kelly was born with hearing loss and in her mid-20s, she was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome*, a genetic condition she had suffered since birth. She had competed in a number of triathlons and endurance events such as the Port
Macquarie Ironman (2013) and Norway’s Midnight Sun Marathon. As her eyesight deteriorated to the point of being classified as legally blind, competing individually became increasingly difficult. That’s when Katie found her place in the sport of Paratriathlon.

After winning the World Championships in Chicago last year, Kelly has now secured a spot for Triathlon Australia in the PT5 category at the Rio Paralympics 2016.

Kelly was guided by Australia’s Michellie Jones, the two-time International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Champion (1992 and 1993), 2000 Olympic silver medallist and 2006 Hawaiian Ironman winner.

In the Paratriathlon event for vision impaired athletes, the guide is attached to the athlete by a tether on the swim and the run, and a tandem bike is used for the cycle. It consists of a 750m swim; 20km bike ride and a 5km run.

Kelly resides in Canberra and trains under Head Coach of the Australian Paratriathlon team Corey Bacon.

Coach Bacon was delighted with Kelly’s performance. “Katie and Michellie worked together brilliantly in difficult conditions and it’s an honour to be working with them. Katie’s effort was incredible considering it was her first year of elite racing. To qualify and win the World Championships was a great result for her and Michellie Jones. We have the year planned ahead and are very cautiously and meticulously planning Katie’s next 9 months, to ensure we are ready for the Paratriathlon at the 2016 Rio Paralympics,” he said.

Adrian Lafleur, Managing Director of Magnetite, said Katie’s story was an example of overcoming the odds by continually pushing the boundaries to achieve excellence.
