A recent study of national sleep habits found 1 in 3 Australian adults struggle with their sleep. Moreover, this study also suggested one third of Australians wake up feeling unrefreshed at least several mornings a week.

While the impacts of sleep deprivation are widely known, it'€™s undeniable that 8 hours sleep is often seen as a luxury. The inability to detach from the digital world has also been found to affect our sleep patterns, especially amongst youngsters. Whilst for others, noise pollution is a regular cause of disturbed sleep leading to a feeling exhaustion in the morning. So what could we do to fix this?

Get back to the natural habit
Early to bed, early to rise has been long known as a mantra for healthy life. It is not always easy to make this a routine. Switching off those artificial lights that come from your smartphones or tablets before going to bed could lead to a better night sleep. Research found those artificial blue lights interfere with sleep hormones and disrupt sleep. Likewise, waking up slowly to the natural lights will give a refreshed feeling after a good night's sleep. It is important to put our body back to its natural habit, sleep when it's dark and rise when it's light.

Reduce the outside noise
Who wouldn't be annoyed listening to constant traffic noise before going to bed or waking up to the noise of a garbage truck? Yes, urbanisation has made noise pollution inevitable. Consequently, noise pollution becomes a significant cause of sleep disturbance and annoyance.

The World Health Organisation'€™s research on the Burden of Disease from Environmental Noise identified noise pollution as cause of severe sleep disturbance, it also indicated noise particularly road and aircraft increase the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure. To cut a long story short, don't put up with noise if you're looking for healthy life.

Installing double glazing can immediately reduce noise and create quieter rooms. In typical homes, single glazed windows often let in a high amount of noise. In addition, double glazing can also help to create a more comfortable and consistent room temperature for better sleep. Most experts agree anything over 23 degrees Celsius or below 12 degrees Celsius is likely to disrupt sleep. It is no wonder people often wake up around 3-4am which is the coldest point of the night
